Fun Gardening Activities

Growing your own herbs and vegetables is not only healthy it's fun! Here's a bunch of fun activities for you to try in your garden.

Food Rainbow Activity

This fun activity is a great way to teach kids that foods come in a variety of colours and that a healthy diet involves choosing lots of different coloured fruits and veggies.

  1. Draw a rainbow on the whiteboard/blackboard with your kids/classroom.

  2. Ask the kids to draw or write as many foods they can think of for each colour, e.g. strawberry (red), apple (red or green), banana (yellow).

  3. Explain that different fruits and vegetables have different vitamins and minerals in them, so it is good to try and eat as many different colours as possible.

Examples of coloured Fruits and Vegetables:

  • Red - apple, watermelon, strawberry, tomato, raspberry

  • Orange - orange, apricot, carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato

  • Yellow - banana, lemon, corn, squash

  • Green - lime, pear, celery, cucumber, lettuce, green capsicum, broccoli, beans

  • Blue - blueberry (not many foods are blue)

  • Purple - grapes, plum, eggplant
